Seasons: A Year in Your Life

By Sara Jane

At the time of writing this, we have just had the Autumn Equinox.

The days are getting shorter, the trees are losing their leaves, there is a chill in the air.

The squirrels and other animals are creating a store of food to see them through the winter months, birds are migrating to warmer climes and other creatures are preparing for hibernation.

In olden times humans followed the seasons, they didn’t have all the amenities we have today, so in this period of slowing down, just as nature does, they prepared for dark, cold days, gathered food, found a safe and warm place to shelter, to rest and rebuild their strength.

As we move from Autumn into Winter, much of nature sleeps, the barren trees, hedgerows and earth, protecting the life that will merge from the depths with the coming of Spring.

For nature it is a time of rest and regeneration.

Humans still need time of rest and rejuvenation, to slow down, to have time with themselves and their thoughts. Making the most of the quieter months of the year. Preparing for the spring and times of planting for the new season of growth and abundance.

As Winter releases its grip, the days slowly lengthen, the sun grows warmer and nature starts to bloom. With the blossom come the bees and other pollinators, the birds start to build their nests, anticipating bringing new life into the world.

With Spring comes activity, a time of preparation, of joy, anticipation. Do you feel it in your heart as you hear the songs of the birds, feel the kiss of the sun, anticipate the coming Summer of warmth and play?

Do you feel invigorated, more alive, watching nature as it starts to shine in all its glory?

Spring turns into Summer, with long warm days, with the harvesting of what began in Spring. The young fledge from their nest, Dragonflies, Butterflies and more hatch, everywhere there is new life. Nature is busy.

Do you embrace the Summer? Do you fill your days with meaning and the wonder of the world around you? Are you grateful for the gift of life, the nature that sustains you?

Then as the days start to get shorter and slip into Autumn, another cycle of life for Humans and nature is complete.

Have we honoured that cycle or have we got to the point of not noticing the sun in the sky as it rises and sets every day, the moon’s phases, the stars in the sky, the clouds, the colours and sounds that surround us?

Nature is a beautiful guide, one our ancestors knew well and respected, have we fallen so far down the “rabbit hole”, that we have lost our belief in the wisdom of nature and in ourselves?

Only you can answer that for yourself.
