What is Normal? And Whose Definition is it Anyway?

By Sara Jane

What is Normal?

For me it is a term used to put as many people as possible in a box of same or at least very similar.

And those of us that don’t fit into that box, what term is used for us – weird, abnormal, non-conformist, handicapped, neurodiverse, peculiar, difficult… I’m sure you have other terms in mind.

But is the truth not that we are all the same but all different, all unique, with our own special gifts that we bring, in our own individual way.

We are not the same as each other.

Our upbringing, gender, race, religion, social group, experiences; how each of these affects us and how we perceive life and the world around us, shapes us.

For each of us, these things make up our normal.

As we grow up, we learn from our parents, teachers, guardians, etc.

As we move beyond our adolescent years, we start to think for ourselves and evaluate those things we have been told about us and who others think we should be.

We can choose to stick with what we have been told, possibly becoming clones or copies of our parents etc or we can choose to feel into what resonates with us.

Who do you think you are?

What do you wish to do with your life?

Are you ready to let go of the conditioning?

Are you prepared to explore yourself, your surroundings, what is out there in the great wide world?

If you haven’t already, are you ready to step into your own life as its leader, to steer a course through this world that may not fit the “norm” but speaks to the individual that you are?
